We look at 14 of the best restaurants in Sabaneta, Colombia. Sabaneta is the smallest municipality in Colombia and is located south of Medellín and Envigado in the Aburrá Valley.

I have lived in Sabaneta for over three years and during this time have eaten at well over 60 restaurants in Sabaneta. The following is my list of the 14 best restaurants in Sabaneta.

Sabaneta has been growing rapidly and is adding restaurants at a fast pace. For example, when Mayorca mall in Sabaneta was expanded in late 2015, it added many new restaurants.

TripAdvisor for Sabaneta is missing many of the best restaurants in Sabaneta. So, be careful with TripAdvisor restaurant ratings for Sabaneta.

With my Colombian wife’s help, we both collaborated to select and order the following list of the 14 best restaurants in Sabaneta:

Bandeja paisa at El Viejo John

Bandeja paisa at El Viejo John

1. El Veijo John – Best Restaurants in Sabaneta

Restaurante El Viejo John is a very popular restaurant in Sabaneta that specializes in traditional Colombian food. Many locals in Sabaneta consider El Veijo John the best restaurant in Sabaneta. It’s a great place to experience Colombian food including Antioquian specialties like bandeja paisa.

El Viejo John has many traditional Colombian dishes on the menu including bandeja paisa, buñuelos, cazuela de mariscos (seafood casserole), empanadas, mondongo soup, pescado frito(fried fish) sancocho soup and tamales.

The portions at El Viejo John are huge and the prices are reasonable. I frequently have needed to ask them to pack some of the leftovers to take home, as it has been too much to eat.

There are over 20 different fish dishes on the menu ranging in price from 22,500 to 34,000 pesos. And the 11 different bandejas on the menu are priced from 16,500 to 22,550 pesos. The seven different sancocho soups are priced from 11,000 to 19,000 pesos (three of these are only available on the weekend).

And there are many other options on the menu and many additional sides you can add to the entrees.

2. Mama Santa Parrillada

Mama Santa Parrillada is a steakhouse in Sabaneta that is popular with locals with good steaks and a nice ambience. It’s my favorite steakhouse in Sabaneta.

Mama Santa is known as a parilla, which is a restaurant where grilled-meats are served. And in the U.S., we’d call it a steakhouse.

Mama Santa has a nice atmosphere with open air sides. So, it’s a good place to go with your sweetheart or with friends, family or business associates. Also, on the weekends, it even hosts live music with some local entertainers.

Mama Santa originally opened in 2000 at a different location in Sabaneta, in Prados de Sabaneta. I first discovered this restaurant at its old location several years ago. And about 2011, it reportedly moved to its current location on Avenida Las Vegas in Sabaneta.

Mama Santa has many options on the menu. Since it’s a steakhouse, the specialties are dishes from the grill. There are over 10 different steak options including three imported steaks with the steak prices ranging from 29,800 to 52,000 pesos.

El Sombrero actually has two sections. One is the restaurant and the other is a “factory” where they make Mexican food products. So, the products used in the restaurant are made locally.

The restaurant’s slogan is “Colores y sabores de México” (Colors and Tastes of Mexico). The inside of the restaurant is very colorful similar to what you find in Mexico and the food is authentic Mexican food. So, it delivers on its slogan.

The buñuelos at El Peregrino are famous and are sized at 200 grams. And they are made from a recipe brought by Pedro José Vásquez from the pueblo San José de la Montaña about five decades ago.

Vásquez’s son Pedro Vásquez Pino is the founder and owner of El Peregrino. His grandmother provided a very specific recipe to made the buñuelos, which require very fresh and high-quality ingredients.
