Pizza is very popular in Medellín and we look at 15 of the best pizza places in Medellín and the Aburrá Valley with very good pizzas, updated for 2022.
The following ranking of best pizza places in Medellín and the Aburrá Valley is based on my personal opinion with the help of my Colombia wife after having eaten pizzas at all of these pizzerias and many others. Also, we have talked to many foreigners about their favorite pizzerias in Medellín, which was considered in deciding on the best pizzerias.
Here is our ranking of the 15 best pizza places in the Medellín and the Aburrá Valley updated for 2022, which includes the best pizza places in Medellín and the nearby municipalities of Envigado and Sabaneta:
1. Ammazza Pizzeria & Gin Garden
Ammazza Pizzeria & Gin Garden is a popular chain of three pizzerias in Medellín with excellent brick-oven cooked thin-crust pizzas as well as some good Italian food.
“Ammazza” is the name of the pizzeria chain that was chosen due to it translating to ¨amazing¨. And this is reportedly the goal, mission and vision of these three pizzerias.
In addition, Ammazza is a pioneer in Colombia in the world of gin & tonics that are popular in Europe but pretty unknown in Colombia. So, the pizza chain has created a gin bar prepared with a range of botanicals.
Ammazza is currently my favorite pizzeria in the Medellín area. And if you like thin-crust pizza with high quality ingredients cooked in a brick oven, Ammazza is highly recommended.
The pizzas at Ammazza come in one size with eight slices. On the menu at Ammazza are 17 different pizzas with pizza prices ranging from 22,900 to 39,500 pesos.

The pizzeria has a relaxed vibe and an open kitchen. And the ceiling is covered with Colombian bamboo. Also, on the Parque Presidential side, there is a small outdoor patio area.
This is a very popular pizzeria due to having some very good pizzas. So, there is normally a wait for a table in the evening, particularly on the weekends. So, we recommend going early.

This pizzzeria reportedly opened in October 2007 and it has a loyal local customer base.

A German expat named Jens owns the Bigotes pizzeria chain. He opened his first pizzeria in the Carlos E. Restrepo neighborhood over five years ago in July 2013.
Bigote is Spanish for mustache and the name of the pizzeria comes from the German owner who has a white mustache that twists on both ends.
The German expat owner Jens is an engineer who first arrived in Medellín in 2010. He was looking to escape an economic crisis in Europe at the time. He moved from Tenerife, Spain, where he lived and managed five pizzerias with his brother.
The recipe for Bigotes’ pizza was brought to Colombia by Jens, who for more than three decades perfected, along with his brother, the traditional formula of artisanal German pizzas.

Ragazzi has very good pizzas that are served on a skillet to keep the pizzas hot, something I haven’t seen at another pizzeria in Medellín. Also, it has some good pasta dishes.
The pizzas at Ragazzi come in three sizes: personal (18 cm), for a couple (28 cm) or with friends (38 cm). On the menu at Ragazzi are 16 different pizzas. And the pizza prices range from 19,500 to 23,500 pesos for 18 cm, 25,500 to 32,500 pesos for 28 cm or 33,500 to 39,500 for 38 cm.

14. Sicilia in Bocca
Sicilia in Bocca is a small pizzeria located on Calle 10 in El Poblado not far from Parque Lleras. This pizzeria came in second place in the 2017 Pizza Master competition. And the owner of this pizzeria is from Sicily.
I have been to this pizzeria several times. The ingredients used are fresh and the pizza itself is an authentic Italian-style pizza with a very good thin crust. The only negative about this place is that it’s tiny with only about six tables and it’s popular. So, it may be difficult to get a table during lunch or dinner.
Sicilia in Bocca used to have a second location in the Monterrey mall. But this location closed due to problems with employees in this second pizzeria.

Be Careful of TripAdvisor Reviews – the Best Pizza Places in Medellín and the Aburrá Valley
TripAdvisor has a list of the best pizza places in Medellín and also in Envigado and Sabaneta. But it appears that you can’t search on Trip Advisor for the best pizza places in Medellín and the Aburrá Valley with the other municipalities in the Aburrá Valley included.
TripAdvisor rates Takeout as the best pizzeria in Medellín. But in our opinion, many pizzerias in the area have better pizzas than Takeout. We have looked at why TripAdvisor can’t be trusted for Medellín.
Here is TripAdvisor’s ranking of the top 12 pizza places in Medellín on February 14, 2021:
- Takeout
- Ammazza Gin Garden (Provenza)
- Café Zorba
- Massi’s Grab and Go Pizzeria
- El Zorro Y La Gitana
- Toscano
- Pizzeria
- Pizzeria Olivia (Laureles)
- Ammazza Garden (Laureles)
- Opera Pizzeria & Restaurante
- Pizzaiolo
- Cavieli Ristorante Caffe
- Dante
- City Pizza
- La Serenissimo Venezia
One problem with this list is that some of these places are Italian restaurants that also serve pizzas. So, their high rating on TripAdvisor can be due to the Italian food and not necessarily the pizzas. There is no way I would include several places listed on TripAdvisor’s list in an accurate list of the best pizza places in Medellín.
Also, be skeptical with TripAdvisor reviews, as not all the highest rated restaurants are so good. Even friends of a restaurant can post reviews on TripAdvisor.
To demonstrate the problem of fake reviews with TripAdvisor, a reporter even made his garden shed the top-rated London restaurant with fake reviews.
I recall several years ago when the Flip Flop Sandwich shop was the highest rated restaurant in Medellín on TripAdvisor, which was pretty absurd considering there are many better restaurants in the city. Flip Flop Sandwich shop is now ranked #104 in Medellín.
In addition, there are also companies which businesses can hire to create highly believable fake TripAdvisor reviews, fix a reputation if they’ve received bad reviews, or even sabotage competitors.
I have found that you can use TripAdvisor to help find potential best restaurants but I also ask friends and locals for recommendations in the area, as you can’t really depend on the rankings on TripAdvisor.
What About the Big Pizza Chains in Medellín?
In my opinion, all 14 pizzerias listed above have better pizzas than the big pizza chains in Medellín like Domino’s, Jenos’s Papa John’s, Pizza Doble Pizza or Pizzas Picolo. In my opinion, none of these big chains belongs on the list of the best pizza places in Medellín.
Also, in my opinion, Papa John’s has the best pizza out of the big pizza delivery chains in Colombia. But all 15 of the above independent pizzerias we have looked at have better pizzas than Papa John’s and the other big pizza chains in Colombia.
Also, some readers have asked if there are any pizzerias with good Chicago deep-dish pizza in Medellín.
I previously lived in Chicago for two years and like Chicago deep-dish pizza. But unfortunately, I haven’t found any good Chicago deep-dish style pizza in Medellín, yet.
Pizza Master Medellín
Pizza Master Medellín 2018 started on Monday, October 22 in Medellín and ran until Sunday, October 28.
This was a promotion where 41 pizzerias in Medellín offered a special promotion pizza for only 13,000 pesos. And with a soda the cost became 16,000 pesos or with a beer for 18,000 pesos.
Pizza Master selected the best five pizzerias in each participating city based on its competition. But in my opinion, this was a flawed competition. For example, not all the best pizzerias in Medellín are participating.
In 2018, only the following 6 out of the top 14 pizzerias in Medellín in our curated list above participated in Pizza Master:
- #5 Olivia
- #7. Ná Pizza
- #8. Pizza en Leña
- #9. Ragazzi Pizzas Y Pastas
- #11. Pane e Pomodoro
- #13. Sicilia in Bocca
And not one of top four pizzerias in our above list of the best pizza places participated. So, how can they claim the results are the “best pizzerias in Medellín”?
This is the same problem as last year. Many of the best pizzerias in the city did not participate in the 2018 Pizza Master because they would have to offer pizzas at a discounted price of 13,000 pesos when their normal price may be 20,000 pesos or more.
In addition, each pizzeria only enters one type of pizza in the competition. So, a restaurant that chooses a popular combination of ingredients could possibly have a better chance to win. This competition isn’t necessarily comparing apples-to-apples.
Here is the list of the top four pizzeria winners in the 2018 Pizza Master competition:
The 2018 Pizza Master promotion also ran in Bogotá, Barranquilla, Cali and Bucaramanga at the same time. A total of over 150 pizzerias in Colombia participated in this promotion.
Furthermore, the 2019 Pizza Master promotion is similar and includes over 200 pizzerias in 14 cities in Colombia and runs from October 21 to 27. The prices are the same as in 2018. But only two pizzerias in our above best pizza places in Medellín list participated in the 2019 Pizza Master in Medellín: Ragazzi Pizzas Y Pastas and Burro Pizzeria.

Jeff thanks for this site! It’s been amazing during our extended stay here. I would definitely add Angelo Pizzeria to you list. He’s from Naples and it’s a small place well off the tourist area in El Poblado. One of the best we have had outside of Italy. Also if you like spicy they have a Carolina Reaper infused olive oil that will leave you with your thirst for spice quenched! Please go check it out if you haven’t!
Thanks and thanks for the suggestion, we’ll try it out next time we are in the area.
Went to Pizzeria Centro earlier this week. To sum up: outstanding pizza but really terrible service.
Mark: Agreed.
We all have our individual tastes, but I consider myself a true pizza fanatic. Cracker crust pizza is, for me, a pizza-like product, and you would get tossed out of Naples, Italy if you tried to sell it as serious pizza! In a desperate pinch it will do.
The best real crust is at Cafe Zorba. Jamie Gerig (Instagram: @jamiegerig) the owner-chef is as serious as one can be about quality. It’s all vegetarian, but you can take it home, add toppings, and re heat in a lightly oiled cast iron skillet and it will be amazing.
Jeff, thanks for this list. I moved to Medellin last year and until I tried Sicilia in Bocca late last year I hadn’t found a pizza here I liked. The main reason is that every other prizza I had tried was a cracker crust pizza, which to me isn’t the same as a thin crust pizza. I’ve tried a lot of the places on this list now which has given me a number of excellent options – Pizzaria Centro, Due Amici, Pane e Pomodoro, Pizza en Leña. I would not classify any of these as cracker crust, Due Amici being the closest to that, but I’ve tried both Opera and Olivia in the past and I think they were both cracker crust pies. I don’t know if other people are the same, but I don’t even think of a cracker pie as a real pizza, it’s just a big cracker with sauce and cheese on it, so it would be helpful if you made that distinction. It looks like you have other crackers on your list, like perhaps Burro, and I would likely steer clear if I knew that. Pizza is all about the crust! Btw, the only pizza I’ve tried here that I thought didn’t deserve to make the cut was at Ragazzi in Laureles.
En el municipio de LA ESTRELLA existe una pizzería y restaurante VEGETARIANO que es difícil igualarlo se llama “ARIGATO” la recomiendo es insuperable. (in English) In the municipality of LA ESTRELLA there is a pizzeria and restaurant VEGETARIAN that is difficult to match is called “ARIGATO” I recommend it is second to none.
Hola Jeff , te recomiendo que pruebes las pizzas de Bahareque en Caldas , las hacen en horno de leña , son espectaculares . Y de precios ni te cuento.
(in English) Hello Jeff, I recommend you try the pizzas in Bahareque in Caldas, they make them in a wood oven, they are spectacular. And I do not tell you about prices.
I am curious why you did not include Burro in Envigado? I think their pizza is pretty good, although the thin crust gets really crispy if you take home what you couldn’t finish and then eat the cold pizza for breakfast the next day.
Yes, cold leftover restaurant pizza for breakfast the next day is actually a thing.
Thanks, there are so many pizza places in the Aburrá Valley, haven’t tried them all. I added Burro to my list of restaurants to try.
Sicilia en Boca has decent pizza if you can manage to deal with the people who work there. Last time I was there I was the only table waiting for one pizza. After 25 minutes I asked what was going on and I get an answer like “hey it’s not frozen, so it takes time”. After 10 more muintes I just paid the bill an left without ever seeing a pizza. Asked about the pizza vognole (clams in Italian) guess what, there are no clams on that pizza. Went there one night looking for a pasta dish, just to be informed that they had no pasta in the restaurant to cook. It’s an Italian restaurant. When the owner finally decided to talk to me he literally turned and walked away from me in the middle of the conversation. The pizzas are edible, but the attitude is not.
Jeff, This post has really missed the mark. The best pizza in Medellin is Graspo De Uva close to Park Poblado 9th.
I disagree, last two times I went to Graspo De Uva the pizza was soggy so I never went back. Based on my experiences I didn’t cover it and can’t recommend it. Also, it’s not ranked very high on TripAdvisor, which has 19 pizzerias ahead of it. So, I’m not the only one that thinks other pizzerias are better.
We at last night at Ammazza in Laureles and it was as advertised – salmon appetizer was excellent, great drinks and the pizza that carries their name was thin crusted, crisp, and tasty. Place was spotless, waiter was on the spot, beautiful night sitting outside. Thank you for providing this info – it made for a great night out.
Hi John, thanks. Yes, Ammazza has some great pizzas.
I have enjoyed both Ammazza and Due Amici a few times recently. Although Due Amici struggled with service my last time it is a nice neighborhood joint
Thanks for this guide to the best pizza places in Medellin. There are some at the top of the list I need to try out.
Hi Jim, thanks and hope you enjoy.
All those pizzas look amazing! I want to eat them all lol.
Great article. The pizzas at Ammazza are awesome with fantastic thin crust and definitely the best pizza I have found in Medellin. I tried it last month thanks to your article about Ammazza.
Thanks for the nice post. I love the pizzas at Cafe Zorba but haven’t tried Ammazza or Pizzeria Centro yet.
I dont normally eat pizza because it is primarily bread, but I do enjoy an occasional pizza. I believe Na Pizza in Envigado is great but not too many people know about it.
Hi John, thanks. I added Ná Pizza in Envigado to the list of pizzerias to try out.
