Centro Comercial Premium Plaza is one of the largest and most popular malls in the Medellín metro area. The mall is very popular and a unique feature is that most of the third floor dedicated to entertainment. Premium Plaza originally opened on December 12, 2007 with reportedly over 1.2 million square feet of space and over 400 shops.
Premium Plaza was a landmark development project in an urban renewal development zone. And this reportedly was the largest mall in Medellín until Santafé Mall opened in 2010.
Several expats I have met think that Premium Plaza is located in El Poblado. But it’s actually located in the La Candelaria comuna (El Centro). It’s essentially on the southern border of La Candelaria with El Poblado.
The Shops in Premium Plaza Mall
The anchor tenants of the mall include Africa Parque de Diversiones, Bodytech, Jumbo, Lorito and Royal Films. In addition, the mall has over 400 shops and businesses of all types. The mall also has several stores with good prices.
The shops and businesses in the mall include banks, male and female fashion, children’s and youth clothing, footwear, jewelry, sporting goods, stationery, furniture and decoration, lingerie, opticians, travel agencies, restaurants and fast food places.
Also, there are shops in the mall for the three major cellphone providers in Colombia: Claro, Movistar and Tigo-UNE.
The banks in the mall include Banco Caja Social, Bancolombia, BBVA and Colpatria.
Africa Parque de Diversiones
The Africa Parque de Diversiones in the mall is a large arcade on the third floor with many types of games for all ages. It’s a popular place to celebrate birthday parties and sometimes business events.
Africa Parque de Diversiones has two locations in Colombia. It has one location in Medellín and a second location in Centro Comercial Multiplaza in Bogotá.
On the third floor of Premium Plaza besides this amusement park, there are also go-karts for adults and kids, tennis courts and a soccer field. In addition, there is a casino, a movie theater and several restaurants and bars.
Besides the Bodytech gym and a Claro store, everything else on the third floor of the mall are entertainment related or restaurants or bars.
Bodytech in Premium Plaza
Bodytech is a chain of high-end gyms located throughout Colombia’s major cities. It opened its first location in Bogotá in 1998 and now has over 85 gyms in Colombia.
Bodytech currently has 19 locations in the Medellín metro area. Most of these are standalone and a few are located in malls.
Bodytech in Premium Plaza is located on the third floor and offers scenic views looking towards Cerro Nutibara and Laureles.
Jumbo is a large supermarket that also sells appliances, electronics, clothes, home furnishings, kitchen items, and many other things. A Jumbo is similar to a Walmart or Target in the US.
Jumbo has five stores in Medellín, which are located in the Premium Plaza and Santafé malls as well as additional stores at La 65, Envigado and Rionegro.
If you shop frequently at Jumbo you should sign up for Jumbo Puntos (points). Jumbo Puntos is a frequent shopper program where you accumulate points for each purchase. These points can be used to purchase items in the future. However, to sign up you need a cedula.
Jumbo frequently has sales on appliances, TVs and other electronics, which are similar to the sales at Exito. If you are furnishing a place, make sure to check out the sales at both Jumbo and Exito.
Jumbo used to be named Carrefour in Colombia. France-based Carrefour sold all of its stores in Colombia to Chile-based Cencosud in 2012.
Cencosud uses the Jumbo brand for its network of hypermarkets that can also be found in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru. Cencosud’s main objective is to become the largest retailer in Latin America.
Lorito in Premium Plaza
Lorito is a company that sells articles and accessories for the family. At this store you can find products from different categories including home, toys, seasons, sports, hardware and many more.
The company buys directly from factories around the world and sell in Colombia to stores, companies and Lorito stores. It’s possible to find some good prices in this store and I have bought many things for the apartment in this store.
Lorito has only three stores in Colombia. One is in Premium Plaza in Medellín, the second is in Tesoro Mall in Mededellín and the third is located in the Unicentro mall in Pereira.
Movies at Royal Films
Royal Films has a six-screen movie theater located on the third floor of the mall. Royal Films is a movie theater chain in Colombia with movie theaters in over 25 cities in Colombia.
In the Medellín metro area, Royal Films has four movies theaters located in Premium Plaza, LA 65, Bosque Plaza and Arrayanes Plaza in Itagüí.
Royal Films has a frequent moviegoer card, Cliente Royal, which is free. With the card you can buy tickets at discounted rates and receive a free movie ticket on your birthday.
Premium Plaza Food Options
Premium Plaza has several locations in the mall with food options. And there are over 40 fast food places and restaurants in the mall.
There are two food courts on the second floor – one is much smaller than the other. In addition, there are several sit-down restaurants located on the third floor.
Fast food options include Asia Wok, El Corral, Frisby, KFC, Montolivo, Qbano and Subway.
How to Get to Premium Plaza Mall
The easiest way to get to Premium Plaza Mall is to take the Medellín Metro A line to the Industriales station. The mall is located only four blocks to the east, which is about a five-minute walk.
Also, if you are on the Metroplús line in Belén, you can take Line 2 to a stop right across the street from the mall. Premium Plaza is also only about a five minute walk from San Diego Mall.
Furthermore, almost every taxi or Uber driver in Medellín will know where this mall is located. In addition, it’s fairly easy to catch a taxi at the mall with usually several taxis lined up at the two major entrances of the mall.
