Many restaurants in Medellín closed including some located in gastronomic markets that closed. We look at over 70 closed restaurants, many that closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
A restaurant can be difficult business and the coronavirus pandemic made this type of business even more difficult.
In the early days of the pandemic, restaurants in Medellín closed for table service for about five months and could only provide delivery services. But in August 2020, over 6000 restaurants opened in Medellín for table service.
Here is a list in alphabetical order of restaurants we have covered on Medellin Guru that we have confirmed have closed. Note our lit includes over 70 restaurants including small format restaurants in three gastronomic markets that closed.
Note that some in our list closed before the coronavirus pandemic.
1. Café Moreno: A Popular Restaurant/Bar in Sabaneta
Café Moreno Cocina Bar was a popular restaurant/bar in Sabaneta located near Parque Sabaneta with very good food but it closed in April 2020 in the early days of the pandemic.
2. Da Filippo: A Pizzeria in El Poblado in Medellín
Da Filippo Pizza Artigianale was a popular pizzeria located in El Poblado in Medellín. But it closed in mid-2019 before the pandemic.
2. Delaire Sky Lounge: Dining with a View in Medellín
Delaire Sky Lounge was a popular restaurant and bar located in El Poblado in Medellín.
It was located at the top of the Rio Sur mall in El Poblado. So, it had beautiful views of the city. But this place closed in early 2019. So, this restaurant closed before the pandemic.
3. Federal Ribs: A Chain of Rib Restaurants
Federal Ribs was a popular chain of 3 restaurants in Medellín that had some good American-style BBQ ribs as well as good burgers but this chain is closed.
We confirmed in late 2020 that all three Federal Ribs had closed.
4. La Bronca: A Popular Mexican Restaurant/Bar in Medellín
La Bronca was a popular Mexican restaurant/bar located in El Poblado in Medellín with a nice atmosphere and good tacos but is now closed. It closed several months ago.
5. Mercado Del Tranvía Envigado: A Gastronomic Market in Envigado
Mercado Del Tranvía Envigado was a new gastronomic market in Medellín, which had a collection of about 25 restaurants and bars in a warehouse located near Parque Envigado in Envigado.
This food market opened in November 2018 but reportedly closed in September 2019 before the pandemic. Mercado Del Tranvía in Envigado had many small format restaurants with a big variety of cuisines available.
6. Mercado Del Parque: A Gastronomic Market in Laureles
Mercado Del Parque was a gastronomic market in Medellín with about 14 restaurants and bars in a building located at the Primer Parque in Laureles but it closed in April 2021.
Mercado Del Parque opened in September 2018 with several small format restaurants.
7. Mercado Del Rio La Strada: A Medellín Gastronomic Market
Mercado Del Rio La Strada was a popular gastronomic market located in El Poblado in Medellín with a collection of about 25 restaurants and bars. It was located on the third floor in the La Strada building on Avenida Poblado along the “Golden Mile”.
Mercado Del Rio La Strada opened on July 13, 2018. And it had about 25 small format restaurants with a big variety of cuisines available. But this market reportedly closed in October 2019 and I confirmed it is closed in early November 2019. So, this closed before the pandemic.
8. Messkla: A Thai Restaurant in Envigado
Messkla was a new Thai restaurant in Envigado that opened in May 2021 and was open only for about four months started by a couple. It closed relatively quickly.
In my opinion, this restaurant was not very well located in a residential area. So, coronavirus was not the only reason for it closing.
9. Randy’s Beach Sports Bar & Grill in Parque Lleras
Randy’s Beach Sports Bar & Grill was the newest sports bar in Medellín that opened in February 2018. It was located in Parque Lleras in El Poblado but closed in late 2018 before the pandemic.
10. Tepito Tacos y Tequila: Mexican Restaurant in Envigado
Tepito Tacos y Tequila was a popular Mexican restaurant located in Envigado with some good and authentic tasting Mexican food but it closed in late 2020.
Tepito Tacos y Tequila originally opened in 2012. It was located in barrio Jardines in Envigado and was popular with locals and some tourists.
Tepito may have moved to Sabaneta to a location that isn’t very convenient at Calle 79 Sur #45A-43 in Barrio Prados in Sabaneta. However, I checked several times for lunch and this has never been open.
The Bottom Line: Many Restaurants in Medellín are Closed – Many Due to the Pandemic
The bottom line, a restaurant can be difficult business and the pandemic made this type of business even more difficult.
Unlike TripAdvisor, when Medellin Guru finds a restaurant is closed we update our articles on Medellin Guru with information that restaurants have closed.

Sad to see that Messkla closed. They had some good Thai food but agree the location was not very good.
