Alumbrados Sabaneta 2021 – Sabaneta, the smallest municipality in Colombia located south of Medellín, officially turned on its Christmas lights on November 27.
In 2019, Sabaneta had over 5 million lights for its Christmas display but much less in 2021 with over 2 million lights. Actually the lights were turned on on November 26 due to President Duque visiting Sabaneta.
The Christmas lights display in Sabaneta in 2021 looks smaller than in 2019 but is still very nice. We also have photos from the 2020 Christmas lights in Sabaneta and the 2019 Christmas lights in Sabaneta.
Alumbrados Sabaneta in 2021 is considered a festival of brightness and light to be enjoyed by the inhabitants and visitors of Sabaneta from November 27, 2021 to the second week in January 2022.
We went on the first day and the Christmas lights started at 8 pm due to a parade that went first. I was told on later days would start earlier.
More About Alumbrados Sabaneta 2021 – Christmas Lights in Sabaneta
For a month and a half, the Main Park in Sabaneta, Parque Sabaneta and its surrounding streets, the Park of the Four Elements (Parquie Cuatro Elementos), the main road corridors of Sabaneta, the roundabouts and the 5 churches of the municipality, will have:
- More than 2 million Led lights
- more than 5 thousand meters of hose and 20 tons of aluminum.
The theme this year is “Sabaneta dresses with hope”, where the concepts of nature, Christmas spirit and technology will merge to generate a colorful, luminous and avant-garde display.
In the Park of the Four Elements (Parquie Cuatro Elementos), a multi-format display will have a show of water jets in sync with audio, video and a drone show, whose figures formed in the sky will illuminate the space of Ssbaneta.
The Christmas lights will be on each night until the second week in January.
Photos of Alumbrados Sabaneta 2021
The following are several photos I took in Parque Sabaneta on November 27, 2021, the first night of the 2021 Christmas lights in Sabaneta. The park was packed with people.
Normally Parque Sabaneta during the Christmas season is the busiest on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
More About Parque Sabaneta and Sabaneta
Parque Sabaneta is arguably the nicest city park/plaza in the Medellín metro area. And Parque Sabaneta is worth visiting particularly during the Christmas season.
In addition, Sabaneta is one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in the Medellín metropolitan area with a popular of over 103,000. And Sabaneta is a municipality that is quickly growing in popularity for foreigners living in the city or visiting the Medellín area.
Sabaneta is a separate municipality located directly south of Envigado. And Envigado is south of El Poblado. Sabaneta is one of 10 separate municipalities in the Aburrá Valley also known as the Medellín metropolitan area by many foreigners. Also, Sabaneta is considered one of the safest neighborhoods in the Medellín and the Aburrá Valley.
The daily life in Sabaneta is typically centered around Parque Sabaneta, which is a one square block plaza that is filled with trees for shade. In addition, this park is surrounded by several small restaurants, bars and shops.
I have been living in Sabaneta for over three years. And Sabaneta is becoming increasingly popular with foreigners. I now hear English several times each month in Sabaneta. When I first started living in Sabaneta over three years ago, I rarely heard any English.
Good Food Near Parque Sabaneta
Around Parque Sabaneta there are many food carts selling Colombian street food and there are many nearby restaurants. Furthermore, many of the restaurants in the area sell traditional Colombian food.
There are several restaurants located in a pedestrian food alley to the right of the church at the park. And within a few blocks of the park beyond the traditional Colombian food restaurants you can also find Italian, Mexican, steak and pizza restaurants.
Next to the park to the right of the church is the El Peregrino restaurant that is famous for its buñuelos. This place makes normal size buñuelos as well some giant buñuelos that are more watermelon size.

How to Get to Parque Sabaneta
An easy way to get to Parque Sabaneta is to take the Medellín metro Line A south to the Sabaneta metro station. And the Sabaneta station is only 10 minutes from the Poblado metro station.
Parque Sabaneta is located about a 10-minute walk east from the Sabaneta station. In addition, there are many people walking on the streets to/from the metro station. So, it’s relatively safe during the day and even after dark – but not too late.
Also, there are frequent and inexpensive metro buses that use Civica cards that cost only 2,300 pesos, which run from the Sabaneta metro station to and from the park.
Most noteworthy, these buses don’t drop you at the park, they drop you about a block from the park.
In addition, there is a taxi stand at the Sabaneta metro station, which normally has taxis available. Furthermore, any taxi driver in Medellín will know where Parque Sabaneta is located. It’s also normally pretty easy to catch a taxi at the park.
The Bottom Line: Alumbrados Sabaneta 2021
Sabaneta may have been the first municipality in the Aburrá Valley to turn on its Christmas lights for 2021. Medellín will turn on its Christmas lights for 2021 on December 3, 2021. And we have confirmed that Envigado, Bello and Itagüí will have Christmas lights. Last year 9 of the 10 municipalities has Christmas lights in 2020.
The lights display is smaller than the last two year but is worth seeing. Locals from around Medellín come to Parque Sabaneta, particularly during the Christmas holidays.
Many local Colombians I have talked to prefer Parque Sabaneta to Parque Lleras. Parque Lleras in El Pobaldo is seen to cater too much to foreigners. Parque Lleras is filled with restaurants, hotels, bars and clubs. And most of these places are expensive, more pretentious and considered to be non-Colombian.
In comparison, Parque Sabaneta is surrounded by Colombian-style bars and fondas as well as many restaurants with local Colombian food. So, this park in Sabaneta is more of an authentic Colombian experience.
The bottom line is that Parque Sabaneta is a very popular park. And during the Christmas season in 2021 with the nice Christmas lights display this year in Sabaneta, we expect this park will be popular with many people each weekend.
