Alumbrados Sabaneta 2019 – Sabaneta, the smallest municipality in Colombia located south of Medellín and Envigado, is having its largest Christmas lights display this year with over five million lights.
Last year in 2018, Sabaneta reportedly only had 900,000 lights for its Christmas display. So, Alumbrados Sabaneta in 2019 is over five times larger.
Alumbrados Sabaneta in 2019 is considered a festival of brightness and light to be enjoyed by the inhabitants and visitors of Sabaneta from November 29, 2019 to January 6, 2020.
Also, we provided photos of Alumbrados Medellín 2019, Medellín’s Christmas lights and photos of Alumbrados Envigado 2019, the Christmas lights in Envigado. And we have a detailed guide to the 2019 Medellín Christmas lights.

The following are several photos I took in Parque Sabaneta on November 29, the first night of the 2019 Christmas lights. The park was packed with people. Normally Parque Sabaneta during the Christmas season is the busiest on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
More About Parque Sabaneta and Sabaneta
Parque Sabaneta is arguably the nicest city park/plaza in the Medellín metro area. And Parque Sabaneta is worth visiting particularly during the Christmas season.
In addition, Sabaneta is one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in the Medellín metropolitan area with a popular of over 103,000. And Sabaneta is a municipality that is quickly growing in popularity for foreigners living in the city or visiting the Medellín area.
Sabaneta is a separate municipality located directly south of Envigado. And Envigado is south of El Poblado. Sabaneta is one of 10 separate municipalities in the Aburrá Valley also known as the Medellín metropolitan area by many foreigners. Also, Sabaneta is considered one of the safest neighborhoods in the Medellín and the Aburrá Valley.
The daily life in Sabaneta is typically centered around Parque Sabaneta, which is a one square block plaza that is filled with trees for shade. In addition, this park is surrounded by several small restaurants, bars and shops.
I have been living in Sabaneta for over three years. And Sabaneta is becoming increasingly popular with foreigners. I now hear English several times each month in Sabaneta. When I first started living in Sabaneta over three years ago, I rarely heard any English.
Good Food Near Parque Sabaneta
Around Parque Sabaneta there are many food carts selling Colombian street food and there are many nearby restaurants. Furthermore, many of the restaurants in the area sell traditional Colombian food.
There are several restaurants located in a pedestrian food alley to the right of the church at the park. And within a few blocks of the park beyond the traditional Colombian food restaurants you can also find Italian, Mexican, steak and pizza restaurants.
Next to the park to the right of the church is the El Peregrino restaurant that is famous for its buñuelos. This place makes normal size buñuelos as well some giant buñuelos that are more watermelon size.
Seven of my favorite restaurants within three to four blocks from the park in Sabaneta are:
- El Sombrero – authentic and very good Mexican food
- Mama Santa Parrillada – good steaks located a six-minute walk from the park
- Picnic – Italian food with good Lasagna
- Pizza en Leña – very good brick oven cooked thin-crust pizzas
- Ragazzi – very good thin-crust pizzas served on a skillet to keep the pizzas hot
- El Viejo John – good traditional Colombian food
- El Peregrino – famous for its buñuelos but also has good traditional Colombian food
I have eaten at all seven of these restaurants many times and the food is consistently good. All seven restaurants are located within a few blocks from the park. Addresses of these seven restaurants are as follows:
- El Sombrero: Carrera 43C # 66Sur-27, Sabaneta, +57 4 301 9182
- Mama Santa Parrillada: Calle 72 Sur # 46D-56, Sabaneta, +57 311 719 1298
- Picnic: Carrera 45 # 67 Sur-92, Sabaneta, +57 4 301 9315
- Pizza en Leña: Carrera 44 cl # 70 Sur-32, Sabaneta, +57 4 611 9569

- El Viejo John: Carrera 45 # 70 Sur-42, Sabaneta, +57 4 288 7022
- El Peregrino: Calle 70 Sur # 43b-55, Sabaneta
Also, near Parque Sabaneta is Mercado de Sabaneta, which is one of the newest gastronomic markets in the Aburrá Valley with about 15 restaurants and bars.
How to Get to Parque Sabaneta
An easy way to get to Parque Sabaneta is to take the Medellín metro Line A south to the Sabaneta metro station. And the Sabaneta station is only 10 minutes from the Poblado metro station.
Parque Sabaneta is located about a 10-minute walk east from the Sabaneta station. In addition, there are many people walking on the streets to/from the metro station. So, it’s relatively safe during the day and even after dark – but not too late.
Also, there are frequent and inexpensive metro buses that use Civica cards that currently cost only 2,100 pesos, which run from the Sabaneta metro station to and from the park.
Most noteworthy, these buses don’t drop you at the park, they drop you about a block from the park. And the integrated fare including both the metro train and Sabaneta metro bus is only 2,800 pesos.
In addition, there is a taxi stand at the Sabaneta metro station, which normally has taxis available. Furthermore, any taxi or Uber driver in Medellín will know where Parque Sabaneta is located. It’s also normally pretty easy to catch a taxi at the park.

The Bottom Line: Alumbrados Sabaneta 2019
Sabaneta is having its largest ever Christmas lights display in 2019. Locals from around Medellín come to Parque Sabaneta, particularly during the Christmas holidays.
Many local Colombians I have talked to prefer Parque Sabaneta to Parque Lleras. Parque Lleras in El Pobaldo is seen to cater too much to foreigners. Parque Lleras is filled with restaurants, hotels, bars and clubs. And most of these places are expensive, more pretentious and considered to be non-Colombian.
In comparison, Parque Sabaneta is surrounded by Colombian-style bars and fondas as well as many restaurants with local Colombian food. So, this park in Sabaneta is more of an authentic Colombian experience.
The bottom line is that Parque Sabaneta is a very popular park. And during the Christmas season in 2019 with the sizable Christmas lights display this year in Sabaneta, we expect this park will be even more popular and packed with people each weekend.
