Premium Plaza: A Guide to Medellín’s Shopping and Entertainment Mall

Centro Comercial Premium Plaza is one of the largest and most popular malls in the Medellín metro area. The mall is very popular and a unique feature is that most of the third floor dedicated to entertainment. Premium Plaza originally opened on December 12, 2007 with reportedly over 1.2 million square feet of space and over 400 shops.

Premium Plaza was a landmark development project in an urban renewal development zone. And this reportedly was the largest mall in Medellín until Santafé Mall opened in 2010.

Several expats I have met think that Premium Plaza is located in El Poblado. But it’s actually located in the La Candelaria comuna (El Centro). It’s essentially on the southern border of La Candelaria with El Poblado.

The Shops in Premium Plaza Mall

The anchor tenants of the mall include Africa Parque de Diversiones, Bodytech, Jumbo, Lorito and Royal Films. In addition, the mall has over 400 shops and businesses of all types. The mall also has several stores with good prices.

The shops and businesses in the mall include banks, male and female fashion, children’s and youth clothing, footwear, jewelry, sporting goods, stationery, furniture and decoration, lingerie, opticians, travel agencies, restaurants and fast food places.

Africa Parque de Diversiones has two locations in Colombia. It has one location in Medellín and a second location in Centro Comercial Multiplaza in Bogotá.

Besides the Bodytech gym and a Claro store, everything else on the third floor of the mall are entertainment related or restaurants or bars.

Jumbo Supermarket

Jumbo is a large supermarket that also sells appliances, electronics, clothes, home furnishings, kitchen items, and many other things.  A Jumbo is similar to a Walmart or Target in the US.

Jumbo has five stores in Medellín, which are located in the Premium Plaza and Santafé malls as well as additional stores at La 65, Envigado and Rionegro.

If you shop frequently at Jumbo you should sign up for Jumbo Puntos (points). Jumbo Puntos is a frequent shopper program where you accumulate points for each purchase. These points can be used to purchase items in the future. However, to sign up you need a cedula.

Jumbo frequently has sales on appliances, TVs and other electronics, which are similar to the sales at Exito. If you are furnishing a place, make sure to check out the sales at both Jumbo and Exito.

Jumbo used to be named Carrefour in Colombia. France-based Carrefour sold all of its stores in Colombia to Chile-based Cencosud in 2012.

Cencosud uses the Jumbo brand for its network of hypermarkets that can also be found in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru. Cencosud’s main objective is to become the largest retailer in Latin America.

Lorito is a company that sells articles and accessories for the family. At this store you can find products from different categories including home, toys, seasons, sports, hardware and many more.

The company buys directly from factories around the world and sell in Colombia to stores, companies and Lorito stores. It’s possible to find some good prices in this store and I have bought many things for the apartment in this store.

Lorito has only three stores in Colombia. One is in Premium Plaza in Medellín, the second is in Tesoro Mall in Mededellín and the third is located in the Unicentro mall in Pereira.

The easiest way to get to Premium Plaza Mall is to take the Medellín Metro A line to the Industriales station. The mall is located only four blocks to the east, which is about a five-minute walk.

Also, if you are on the Metroplús line in Belén, you can take Line 2 to a stop right across the street from the mall. Premium Plaza is also only about a five minute walk from San Diego Mall.

Furthermore, almost every taxi driver in Medellín will know where this mall is located. In addition, it’s fairly easy to catch a taxi at the mall with usually several taxis lined up at the two major entrances of the mall.

The Bottom Line: Premium Plaza – Medellín’s Popular Shopping and Entertainment Mall

Centro Comercial Premium Plaza is a nice and convenient mall with a Royal Films for movies, a Jumbo for groceries and many fast food and restaurant options. In addition, it is near the metro and has big selection of shops with over 400 shops.

Since this mall isn’t located in El Poblado but is nearby, it tends to have somewhat lower prices than are found in the malls in El Poblado such as Santafé, Oviedo and El Tesoro.

The unique feature of Premium Plaza Mall is the third floor that has many entertainment options, including a movie theater, a large arcade, go-karts for adults and kids, tennis courts, a soccer field, a casino and several restaurants and bars. So, it’s a popular mall, particularly on the weekends.

    1. My favorite mall by far, mostly because I met my girlfriend here. This was also the closest mall to me and the first few times I was there, I ended up getting lost, that is how big it is. You can also walk to San Diego mall from here and vice versa.

    2. Another good article Jeff. Question: is it hard to find movies in English? What malls are your best bet to catch a movie in English?

Thanks so much Jeff, Looks like a great place for just about everything. Saw this when you posted it, but was too tired to comment. Hope to be there in the next month or 2. Just need to get things set up here 1st!
      Cheers!

The Jumbo at La 65 runs out of my Rosamonte brand Argentinian yerba mate tea and it often takes months & months for them to restock. I thought I’d try the Jumbo at Premium Plaza on the off chance that had some on the shelves. Bingo! They were stocked to the gills and I bought every 1000g bag they had. I’m set for a year. Premium Plaza had the right stuff.

    5. Hey Jeff, I just wanted to say hats off to you for this post and others especially regarding the shopping areas in Medellin. One third of my return trip next month is already planned thanks to all of these shopping, grocery and restaurant areas you’ve highlighted. The Premium Plaza mall is easily accessible to the Metro which is also easily accessible to the Mercado Del Rio which I’m dying to try. That’s a few hours right there! Foreign cities can be very intimidating but your posts put my mind at ease.

Let’s continue to hope that the COP exchange rate remains favorable on any subsequent visits to Medellin otherwise, I’ll be sidelined looking out through windows whilst eating crackers. LOL.

      • Hi Jeff, thanks! Premium Plaza is a nice mall that is easily accessible from the metro unlike the malls in El Poblado like Santafé and Oviedo that are much longer walks (up hill) from the metro. Also, Mercado Del Rio is a great place that is also easily accessible from the metro with a big selection of restaurants.

    6. I live near Premium Plaza and agree its a nice mall with many small shops with good prices. I also shop at the nearby San Diego mall since it has a Falabella.

    7. Nice article and photos. I live near Premium Plaza and agree its a nice mall. There is no need for me to go to the malls in Poblado with this large mall nearby with many stores with lower prices. On the weekends Premium Plaza can be very busy so it can be difficult to find seating in the food court.
