We provide a curated list of weekly Medellin events if you are looking for something fun to do in Medellín. Also, we update our Medellín events list weekly.

This article covers Medellín events during the period from March 26 to April 1, 2020. In addition, this article will be updated weekly with current weekly Medellín events. So, bookmark this page and never miss the best events in Medellín.

In our weekly Medellín events calendar we include events that are primarily of interest to foreigners. Many Medellin Guru readers asked us to start publishing information about other Medellín events. So, we started 26 weeks ago to publish a popular weekly events calendar with Medellín events from Thursday to the following Wednesday each week.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all regular weekly Medellín events in the next week are canceled. Also, Colombia is under a nationwide  Colombia quarantine over a period of 19 days. So, there will be no in-person events in the two weeks.

Medellin Guru had to cancel our March 2020 Medellin Guru Meetup. Our past 14 events each averaged 175 attendees. We will resume our Medellin Guru events at some point in the future.

In this week’s events calendar is only one event that hasn’t yet been canceled in late April.

We decided to include in our calendar this week the regular weekly events that are canceled so readers will know which weekly events have been canceled. We clearly identify below that all these weekly events are canceled.

Trajectory of Coronvirus cases after 100 cases in Western countries, source FT, March 25

Why Medellín Events Should be Canceled

Colombia has exceeded 460 cases of coronavirus and the next few weeks will likely determine the trajectory of cases of coronavirus in Colombia. Will Colombia follow in a trajectory similar to Hong Kong or Singapore? Or will the trajectory of cases in Colombia be similar to other Western countries like the U.S. or Italy where case counts have increased at an alarming rate, see the above chart.

In addition, there has been a dramatic closure of over 1,000 places in Medellín in the past few days to close many places where people congregate.

At this point anything can happen with coronavirus in Colombia. We are currently under a nationwide quarantine in Colombia and there are no in-person events anywhere in the country.

Future Medellín Events

Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Colombia

Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Colombia

April 5 to 11 Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Colombia

When: April 5 to 11

Event link: https://medellinguru.com/semana-santa/

Semana Santa (Holy Week) is the week leading up to Easter Sunday and is one of the most important celebrations in Colombia and is a popular vacation time. Coronavirus will have a major impact on Semana Santa in 2020, as the country is under a nationwide Colombia quarantine during Semana Santa. So, Semana Santa this year will essentially be cancelled.

As part of the preventive measures taken to prevent the spread of coronavirus, the archdiocese of Medellín previously announced on March 18, 2020, that during the duration of the coronavirus emergency the archdiocese will take special protection measures for its faithful, which include the celebration of closed-door Masses and the suspension of the traditional Easter processions.

During Semana Santa, churches will open a few hours a day but only to allow individual prayer spaces, and that while this occurs, cleaning protocols will be extreme. However, going to church is not an approved activity under the rules of the nationwide Colombia quarantine.

In addition, Archbishop Ricardo Tobón made a call not to panic about hoarding of goods and provisions, and to heed the instructions given by the authorities to prevent the situation from worsening.

Furthermore, Tobón reported that the churches of the archdiocese will celebrate masses behind closed doors while the emergency passes. Celebration in churches will be with a small group of people that each pastor will determine and in no way exceed the number allowed by the authorities.

Colombia is a predominately Catholic country and many of the 18 Colombia holidays are religious holidays. Semana Santa commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Normally all over Colombia, cities, towns, family and people typically celebrate and recognize Holy Week in a variety of different ways and levels of intensity. The week of Semana Santa in 2020 in Colombia is from Sunday, April 5 to Saturday, April 11, which was the week before Easter Sunday. This year will be different than a normal year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It should be noted that many in Colombia take this entire Semana Santa week off. While only two of these days are considered national public holidays and two days are on the weekend, it has become traditional for many smaller businesses in Colombia to close for this entire week.

Schools are also closed during this week. But banks and government offices only close on the two public holidays during this week on Thursday and Friday. And most grocery stores are open as well.
