Healthcare and Health Insurance are Very Important for Expats
The World Health Organization (WHO) ranks Colombia’s healthcare system as #57 out of 166 countries it ranked.
In Colombia, it is possible to have access to world-class healthcare at a fraction of the cost compared to the healthcare costs in the U.S. or Europe. Furthermore, the costs for healthcare in Colombia can be significantly lower than the costs found in the U.S.
Colombia has 24 of the best hospitals in Latin America, according to a study in late 2021 by América Economia that looked at the top 61 hospitals in Latin America. So, 39 percent of the best clinics and hospitals in Latin America are found in Colombia.
It is possible to find costs that are from 50 percent to even over 70 percent less expensive in Colombia compared to the U.S. In addition, health insurance is also relatively inexpensive in Colombia in comparison to the U.S. and Europe.
One of the reasons that Colombia has such a highly rated healthcare system is due to a new constitution that Colombia drafted in 1991 that made access to healthcare a basic human right to all citizens of Colombia, as well as foreign residents of Colombia.
There are three types of health insurance available in Colombia:
This is the public health insurance that is mandatory for everybody who is a resident of Colombia. The monthly premium is calculated as 12.5 percent of the 40 percent of monthly gross income that you declare to the EPS.
This is private healthcare insurance in Colombia. The monthly premium for Prepagada varies depending on your age, the plan you choose and any pre-existing conditions.
This is a free government subsidized healthcare system, which is only for colombians with low economic resources .

I am 72 years old and in very good health. I have been living in Medellin most of the last 6 years. I was told I needed health insurance and prefer to receive it and pay my premium. I used the recommended insurance agent Angela. She told me she could not help me. I asked fir a referral to someone that could. I have not received any referral. Can you please help get the best health insurance policy possible?
Thank you
Angela does offer an insurance option for over 70. Bolivar provides private health insurance for up to age 74 and must also have EPS and premiums will be much higher.

Hi Jeff, Thanks for this article on Colombian Insurance. I recently relocated to Medellín, Colombia and have some surgeries planned for a relative here. This would really help me.
Richard
I had a double hernia operation, one on each side of my abdomen at Clinica Las Americas here in Medellin. I opted for the more expensive orthoscopic surgery wherein a tiny slit is made just below the belly button and a rolled up mesh is inserted in the abdomen guided by a camera. It cost me 3000 bucks which was many thousands lower than I could find in the US. I arrived at the Clinic at 5:00 am and was home by 1:00 pm. It has been two years and I can say that the operation results were perfect. It’s like I never had a problem in the first place.
Great idea and good luck with this partnership. Thanks for offering this insurance service that should help many foreigners.
Jeff thanks for the article. I keep hearing that Colombia is high ranked in health care, not sure how they ranked countries. In 2017 I broke my right ankle in a freak accident while on vacation. I was without insurance ( vacation) so the ambulance cost me 150.000 cop. I went to Hospital General of Medellin ( told is the best Orthopedic hospital in Medellin) I was there for 3 days, they set my right ankle in a cast , fed me 3 times a day, and provided a non opioid pain med ( my request). I saw the Doctor once a day, my Nurse only to give me meds, there was no call bell if I needed anything . The gentleman next to me was the one that got me water to drink when I didn’t have someone visiting , Visitors were left to empty my urinal as the RN never barley came by and the one time I asked her to empty a full urinal she just walked away. Every one was fed the same meal no options were offered. my cost was 2.500.000 cop for the 3 days. I was not offered any equipment lo get around. After checking out I stayed with friends until my flight home . Upon returning to the USA I went directly to a Hospital in Boston, where they had to rest my ankle as it wasn’t set correct and recast my right ankle. the next morning they did the surgery of placing a plate and 7 screws to hold everything together. prior to discharge PT set me up with a walker and Crutches making sure I was able to get up and down stairs safely . I was given options for the meals I had, the Nurse emptied my urinal without asking, I always had water near by. From a personal experience I disagree Medellin Healthcare is better than that in Boston . My stay in Medellin was okay it was very basic minimal care.btw I work in the healthcare field in Boston
