Comuna 13 New Tourist Attraction: Cristo Redentor Paisa

Commune 13, which includes San Javier and is located in the western part of Medellín, is one of the 16 communes in which the city is territorially divided. It is one of the most popular, renowned, and frequently visited areas by thousands of visitors who come to witness for themselves the redefinition and resilience of its residents.

Having left behind a history of violence, the residents of San Javier and Comuna 13 have transformed their neighborhood into Medellín’s most attractive tourist area par excellence. Its graffiti, social and cultural dynamics, commercial offerings, stunning city views, and the creativity of its inhabitants are just some of the many attributes that have earned this place widespread recognition, praise, and admiration of all its visitors.

Join us in discovering this unique initiative that will make a lasting impression during your stay in the city.

What is Cristo Redentor Paisa in Comuna 13?

The “Cristo Redentor Paisa” (Paisa Christ The Redeemer) is the largest monument in Latin America, over 11 meters tall, created with 3D printing, which combines innovation, sustainability, and tradition in the heart of Comuna 13. This work stands out for its record size and the innovative technology and sustainable principles employed in its creation through 3D printing technology, as said for El Espectador. This method allowed for manufacturing more than 1,700 individual pieces, meticulously assembled like a gigantic puzzle. The pieces were reinforced with fiberglass and resin, achieving a monumental structure notable for its technical complexity and sustainability.

How was the creation of this Cristo Redentor Paisa?

The idea for its creation was born from Jámerson Restrepo Pérez, an entrepreneur inspired by his love for Comuna 13 and his desire to pay tribute to his family and the history of the region experiencing firsthand the scourge of violence in Comuna 13 during the urban war between 2001 and 2003, in which Jámerson lost his father and two uncles.

In an interview given to us along with other media outlets, this is what Jamerson expressed to us regarding this:

“It is no secret that Comuna 13 was one of the most violent places in Colombia and even in Latin America. Comuna 13 had a lot of guerrilla and paramilitary presence. Sadly, between those wars, they killed my father and two of my uncles. Therefore, this is a tribute to my relatives”

The creative mind behind Christ the Redeemer, who came up with the idea to express it through 3D art over a year ago, also stated in his declarations:

“Indeed, in Comuna 13, we went from being a gray place with a dark past to having a present full of color and transformation, and that is what I wanted to reflect with this Christ,”

Why does Cristo Redentor Paisa have a paisa identity?

The Paisa Christ the Redeemer is not a copy of the iconic Christ of Rio de Janeiro; this sculpture incorporates elements representative of Antioquian culture. It wears a carriel and poncho and a Colombian flag around its neck, symbolizing the local idiosyncrasies, traditions, and pride in the most emblematic Antioquian customs.

Indeed, it is inspired by the famous Christ of Rio de Janeiro, but it is also a way to give a spiritual and transcendental meaning to an area that for a long time was synonymous with violence and that, like Christ, now welcomes visitors and locals with open arms.

“What was done was to start assembling the 1,700 pieces because, in reality, a 3D printing machine does not produce a very large piece, like 1 meter or 2 meters; it creates pieces that are 25 or 30 cm, and what happens is that these pieces are assembled like a puzzle, said Jamerson, recalling the creation of this piece which is now an essential tourist attraction for those visiting the famous town said in an interview to us.

In a captivating interview with El Espectador, Alejandro Osorio, a creative engineer at D3 House and a key player in this groundbreaking initiative, shared some exciting details about their latest project. At the heart of their endeavor is PLA (polylactic acid), an innovative, biodegradable material derived from corn. This eco-friendly alternative to styrofoam reflects their strong commitment to the environment.

The project took shape in the picturesque municipality of La Estrella, nestled in the stunning Aburrá Valley, where a talented team of over 40 individuals—including engineers, craftsmen, and artists—came together to turn their vision into reality. Over the course of a month and a half, they seamlessly blended cutting-edge technology with traditional artisanal skills. This harmonious fusion has not only transformed the Paisa Christ into a striking visual landmark but also serves as a brilliant example of how art can drive sustainable development.

How will Cristo Redentor Paisa strengthen tourism?

Since the inauguration of Paisa Christ the Redeemer Paisa on December 20, in just 25 days, more than 3,000 people have visited it. Therefore, the creators of this work believe that tourism will benefit the most from the figure due to the visit of hundreds of tourists who do not want to miss the opportunity to see this sculpture located in a place full of history and other cultural exhibits that have developed over the years.

In an interview given to us and some other media outlets, it was said:

“The neighbor, the one who has a store next door, thanks me because her sales have tripled. The other neighbor is already selling shirts (…), so this not only benefits me directly but indirectly benefits the families in this neighborhood with increased tourism,”

Additionally, Cristo Redentor Paisa (Paisa Christ the Redeemer) is expected to receive recognition from Guinness World Records as the largest 3D structure in Latin America, enhancing its international appeal.
