11 Best Seafood Restaurants in Medellín – 2021 Update

We look at 11 of the best seafood restaurants in Medellín and nearby that are popular with good seafood including some Peruvian restaurants.

Be careful of using TripAdvisor, which can’t be trusted for restaurants in Colombia. TripAdvisor has many closed restaurants in its lists for Colombia.

I have eaten at over 35 seafood restaurants in Medellín and nearby over the past several years. With my Colombian wife’s help, we both collaborated to select and order the following list of the 11 best seafood restaurants in Medellín and nearby.

1. Donde Bupos

Donde Bupos is a popular restaurant located in El Poblado in Medellín with a big menu with very good and fresh seafood.

Finding quality seafood in Medellín can be a challenge and this is understandably so since the city is nowhere near the coast. But Donde Bupos is one of the best seafood restaurants in Medellín with fresh seafood that is cooked very well with good presentation and service.

I went to the restaurant for the first time several years ago for lunch with a Medellin Guru reader. And the restaurant was full of locals and business people. And I was surprised we were the only foreigners considering the very tasty seafood.

We were both impressed with this restaurant. Also I was surprised how good the seafood is and that I have lived over eight years in Medellín and never been to this restaurant before considering I really like seafood.

This is a family owned restaurant. And the couple that owns the restaurant are reportedly frequently there overseeing the restaurant and making recommendations to customers from the menu. There are over 40 different seafood dishes on the menu at Donde Bupos.

Note the above photos of four of the seafood dishes is courtesy of Donde Bupos.

This restaurant is located in the Vizcaya mall on Calle 10 in El Poblado. It used to be located in the Edificio Recife building on Avenida Poblado but moved.

4. El Barco

El Barco is a hidden gem restaurant in Itagüí near Medellín with very good seafood. This restaurant is located directly above a fish market, so it has its choice of fresh fish.

El Barco (Spanish for “The Ship”) is typically filled with Colombians who know how good it is. However, this restaurant is only open from noon to 4 pm every day. Also, we recommend trying to eat upstairs on the third floor. And the table by the corner window on the third floor provides a nice view, if you can get it.

This restaurant is located near the huge Central Mayorista market in Itagüí. When I visit Mayorista, I normally try to eat lunch at nearby El Barco. El Barco has some very good seafood dishes and is worth visiting.

Also, El Barco is filled with fishing and sea life art and décor. Many of the paintings in the restaurant were done by a local artist and some of the wood pieces were reportedly collected and carved by the restaurant owner.

7. Lo Exquisito del Mar

Lo Exquisito del Mar is a popular seafood restaurant in Medellín with very good seafood. This restaurant cooks its food using methods of the Urabá region of Antioquia.

Lo Exquisito del Mar (Spanish for “The Exquisite of the Sea”) is typically filled with Colombians who know it has good seafood.

I went to the restaurant for the first time recently for lunch with a Medellin Guru reader. And the restaurant was very busy with many Colombians. It was full of locals, families and business people. Also, a birthday party was going on in the restaurant.

Considering the restaurant was busy when we went, the service was good. It’s an informal restaurant with friendly staff. And the seafood was fresh and tasty.

Also, this is a hidden gem on a quiet street near the soccer stadium in Estadio. And eating here feels like an authentic Colombian experience.

Lo Exquisito del Mar cooks its seafood using the traditions of the Urabá region of Antioquia. The Urabá region is located in the northern part of the Antioquia department and borders on the Caribbean Sea.

Urabá is considered a multicultural area since several races are found there including white, Afro-Colombian, mestizo and Indian, which leads to a cultural wealth in terms of its music and gastronomy.

The cuisine of Urabá is unknown to many in Medellín because when you talk about the food of Antioquia you normally think of Bandaja Paisa, mondongo and arepas.

But there is more to the cuisine of Antioquia including the cuisine of the Urabá region of Antioquia, with its fruits, fish and seafood. Also, the different colors and the smell of the beach and the beautiful sunsets found there inspire the cooks of this region.

There are over 40 seafood dishes on the menu at Lo Exquisito del Mar.

In Laureles a seafood restaurant recently opened called Pescatori Pacífico at Carrera 73# C1- 39 …where it intersects with Circular1. On the mistaken assumption that the fish would be farmed in tanks I walked past for a few months without going in. It turns out that the fish is fresh; caught in the Pacific Ocean off Choco’ Department, put on ice and flown in.
I’m a regular now. Without a drink my tab usually runs about 30k which I consider a great bargain. You get a beautiful piece of, say, grouper prepared to order, cocanut rice, a salad nicely done and different than most others & with a side of delicately fried very thin green banana curls which are not cooked until you order them.
