Ajiacos y Mondongos has been open for nearly 30 years. And it’s only open for lunch and is a popular lunch place in El Poblado in Medellin.
This restaurant is popular with locals and some foreigners due to having some very good Colombian food. I have eaten at this restaurant many times and the food and service has always been very good.
Note the above photo is the three Colombian dishes served at this restaurant: Ajiaco soup, Cazuela de frijoles and Mondongo soup.
History of Ajiacos y Mondongos
Ajiacos y Mondongos originally opened in 1991 with the goal to make customers feel like they are visiting a Colombian home with recipes that have lasted for generations along with pleasant and cordial service.
Being true to its roots, this restaurant has a simple menu with only three traditional Colombian dishes. Each is made with fresh ingredients and a number of products used are reportedly grown by the restaurant.
Since it opened in 1991, this restaurant expanded its size to enable the restaurant to be used for family and business events.
The Food Menu
This restaurant specializes in comida típica – traditional Colombian dishes. But the menu is very simple with only three traditional Colombian dishes:
- Ajiaco soup – a popular chicken soup from Bogotá with chicken, potatoes and sweet corn and accompanied with aguacate, arepa, capers and cream.
- Mondongo soup – a popular soup from Antioquia made from diced tripe (the stomach of a cow), which is slow-cooked with chicken or beef stock and pork and potatoes and accompanied with aguacate, areapa, cilantro and banana.
- Cazuela de frijoles – a bean stew from Antioquia with beans, shredded beef, chicharron, plátano, aguacate and potatoes.
So, the restaurant really specializes in Colombian soups.
All three Colombian dishes cost 24,500 pesos or 19,500 pesos for a half-order. And there are eight side additions like arepas, avocado, beans or rice available for 3,200 to 9,200 pesos.
In addition, there are two desserts on the menu: carrot cake for 5,200 pesos and a milk flan dessert for 6,000 pesos.
The Drink Menu
This restaurant has a small drink menu. The drink menu includes a few beers for 5,600 pesos each. And there are pitchers of rafajo (beer mixed with Colombiana soda) available for 17,500 pesos for a small pitcher and 25,900 pesos for a large pitcher.
Also, there is a house wine for 49,900 pesos for a bottle and aguardiente and rum available by bottle or shot.
Furthermore, there is lemonade, guayaba juice or guandolo (cold aguapanela mixed with lemon) available by the glass for 3,600 pesos or pitcher for 19,300 pesos.
