Feria de las Flores is Medellín’s biggest annual festival and normally starts in August. La Feria de las Flores 2021 (Festival of Flowers) has been scheduled for August 12 to 22 in 2021,

The 11-day festival is a huge annual celebration of paisa culture. This year is the 64th annual Feria de las Flores in Medellín. Also, this festival is the most important social event for the city of Medellín. And the Flower Festival is one of the best ways to get an authentic taste of the local culture.

I have attended Feria de las Flores the last eight out of nine years in a row and a couple years before that. Below, I will share the highlight events of this year’s festival, as well as some expat tips so you can enjoy  events.

Feria de las Flores in 2020 was Also Completely Different Due to Coronavirus

Feria de las Flores in 2020 was completely different than prior years due to coronavirus. Not only did the dates change, the format changed as well.

The motto of the 2020 Feria de las Floras was “Volveremos a florecer” (We will bloom again), a message of hope that this city administration wants to deliver and continue with the silletera tradition.

In 2020, there will not be the Flower Parade (Desfile de Silleteros) with huge crowds. Desfile de Silleteros will be held in Santa Elena on November 8 and is closed to the public and will broadcast on the social networks of the Medellín Mayor’s Office and on Telemedellín, the local TV channel.

Instead of having a big flower parade for the public, Medellín instead had smaller caravans in several parts of the city.

These were called Caravanas de las Flores (Caravans of Flowers), floats that are essentially  “mini-fairs” that will exhibit the flowers throughout the neighborhoods of Medellín.

The caravans will tour the neighborhoods of Medellín from November 1 to 5, 2020 starting at 2:00 p.m. each day:

  • November 1 – San Cristóbal Palmitas, Belén and Guayabal.
  • November 2 – Altavista, La Candelaria, Buenos Aires and Villa Hermosa.
  • November 3 – San Antonio de Prado, Popular, Santa Cruz, Manrique and Aranjuez
  • November 4 – El Poblado, Castilla, Doce de Octubre and Robledo.
  • November 5 – Santa Elena, San Javier, La América and Laureles.

After Desfile de Silleteros and the awards ceremony (on November 8), the 510 silletas will be exhibited in Metro stations, shopping centers, Plaza Mayor, Museo de Antioquia and Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín, among other venues.

Also, Feria de las Flores in 2020 did not hold the traditional Parade of Classic and Antique Cars. Instead there were exhibitions of these cars in five shopping malls in the city. The five malls where the Antique cars will be on display are:

  1. Centro Comercial Oviedo, El Pobaldo
  2. El Tesoro, El Poblado
  3. Florida Parque, Robledo
  4. La Central, Buenos Aires
  5. Los Molinos, Belén

Warning there were only a handful of cars on display in each mall.

Last year’s Flower Fair could seen from home. All events were broadcast through the Telemedellín TV channel, the website https://www.feriadelasfloresmedellin.gov.co/, and on mobile apps (for Android and iPhone).

History of Feria de las Flores – the Medellín Flower Festival

The first Feria de las Flores, or flower festival, reportedly took place in Medellin in May 1957. It was intended to host a tribute to the thriving flower business in the Medellín area. And it was organized by Arturo Uribe, a member of the Board of the Office of Development and Tourism.

This first flower festival was referred to as the “Flower Party”. And it lasted for five days with an exposition of flowers displayed in the Catedral Basílica Metropolitana. In addition, the first silleteros parade took place with about 40 men from Santa Elena carrying on their backs flower arrangements to the exposition site

The following year in 1958, the month of the festival was changed to August. This was done to celebrate the independence of Antioquia. Over the next 60 years, additional events were added to the festival, which increased the duration to the current 10 to 11 days each year.

Súper Concierto de Feria de las Flores

A big concert will not been scheduled for Feria de las Flores in 2020 or 2021 due to coronavirus.

The 2019 Súper Concierto de Feria de las Flores was headlined by Marc Anthony along with Ozuna, Carlos Vives, Maluma, Alex Fernandez Jr., Becky G, Yeison Jimenez and Jaycob Duque. The was the fifth year in a row with Marc Anthony as the big concert headliner.

The concert last year was held at the large Estadio Atanasio Girardot sports stadium in Estadio. It is scheduled to start at 6 pm but concerts in Colombia typically start late. And get there early due to lines.

Expat Tips:  For this big concert held in previous years, we recommend buying the more expensive “Platino” tickets and arrive earlier than normal. Platino tickets sold for 312,000 pesos in 2019. You’ll get in faster (possibly saving an hour or more of waiting in line). Tickets for the concert last year were on sale at Tuboleta.

In my experience, big concerts in Colombia are not always well-organized. And the most impressive I have been to in Colombia was seeing Shakira in Barranquilla.

Every year, they dust the cars off and dress up in costumes to go for a drive in the classic car parade. In 2019, over 300 vehicles participated.

History of Desfile de Silleteros (Flower Parade)

The tradition of silleteros has its roots back in the 19th century when people in the rural areas in Antioquia used these silletas (chair-like) devices to carry the sick and elderly.

Santa Elena flower growers were the first to use the silleta to carry flowers, vegetables and herbs to market in Medellín. And they used the silleta to take food and household items they bought in Medellín back to their homes.

The first Feria de las Flores, or flower festival, reportedly took place in Medellin in May 1957. It was organized by Arturo Uribe, a member of the Board of the Office of Development and Tourism. And the idea behind this event was to help promote the flower industry in Colombia. Colombia is the second largest flower exporting country in the world after Holland.

The first festival in Medellín lasted for five days with an exposition of flowers displayed in the Catedral Basílica Metropolitana. In addition, the first silleteros parade took place with about 40 men from Santa Elena carrying on their backs flower arrangements to the exposition site

The following year in 1958, the month of the festival was changed to August. This was done to celebrate the independence of Antioquia. Over the next 61 years, additional events were added to the festival, which increased the duration to the current 10 to 11 days.
