Due to coronavirus there is no Classic Car Parade for Feria de las Flores 2020. Instead classic cars are displayed in 5 malls but it’s a disappointment compared to the traditional car parade.

Feria de las Flores in 2020 will not hold the traditional Parade of Classic and Antique Cars.

Instead there is an exhibition of cars in five shopping malls in the city. The five malls where the Classic and Antique cars will be on display are:

  1. Centro Comercial Oviedo, El Poblado
  2. El Tesoro, El Poblado
  3. Florida Parque, Robledo
  4. La Central, Buenos Aires
  5. Los Molinos, Belén

Also, we confirmed with a Medellin Guru reader that Santafé mall in El Poblado has at least four old Ford cars on display.

Classic Car Display in Malls for Feria de las Flores 2020

I went to three of these malls in Medellín on the first day of Feria de Las Flores (November 1) thinking there would be many cars on display. And I was disappointed. There were only a handful of cars in each mall.

Centro Comercial Oviedo had six cars (and they said three more were coming). Florida Parque had five cars and La Central only had three cars. So, in three malls I only saw 14 cars. We have several photos of the cars in the three malls.

Another disappointment was than no cars on display had a sign saying the make, model and year of each car, as is done on cars in the parade each year.

Oviedo mall in El Poblado had six cars on display. And one of the staff in the mall told me that three more cars were to arrive. The cars are in the new phase of Oviedo mall on the first floor.

2019 Classic Car Parade (Desfile de Autos Clasicos)

In comparison to a handful of cars on display in each of five malls in 2020, the 2019 Classic Car Parade was one of the biggest events with an estimated 1 million attendees watching about 300 cars in the parade.

Colombians have some very old cars that are in excellent condition. And each year Colombians come from all over the country to participate in the car parade. Last year year in the parade I saw cars that came from Bogotá, Bucaramanga, Cali, Manizales, Pereira and several other cities.

We have an article from last year with many photos from the 2019 Classic Car Parade.

Every year, Colombians dust their cars off, dress up in costumes and go for a drive in the classic car parade in Medellín. Reportedly over 300 vehicles participated in the parade last year along a 15-mile (24 km) route.

The vehicles in Desfile de Autos Clasicos are normally in several categories, including

  1. Old vehicles– cars which are at least 35 years old. And they must retain their original specifications.
  2. Classic vehicles– cars which are at least 50 years old. And they must retain their original features and specifications.
  3. Street rod vehicles– cars which are at least 35 years old and retain the completely original exterior and all accessories, emblems and mirrors. Inside parts and mechanicals can change but these should not be noticeable from the outside.
  4. Hot rod vehicles– cars that were completely changed in the mechanics, suspension and body. This includes finishes such as paint and upholstery typically very different from the original. There is a limit of 25 cars in this category selected by a committee.
  5. Vehicles produced, assembled or distributed in Colombia– cars included in this category must be at least 35 years old and at least 95 percent original.

In addition, in the parade there is a special category for military Jeeps and Volkswagens.

The Bottom Line: Classic Car Display for Feria de las Flores 2020 – A Disappointment

There is no Classic Car Parade for Feria de las Flores 2020 due to coronavirus and the huge crowds that attend this parade each year.

Instead, cars are on display in five malls in Medellín. But this was a disappointment. I was expecting to see many cars but there were only a handful of cars in each of the three malls I went to. I only saw 14 cars on display in the three malls I went to.

So, we do not recommend going to one of these malls to see the cars, as there really is not much to see. But if you happen to be in one of these malls, it is worth spending a few minutes to see the cars on display.
