68th Desfile de Silleteros – Silleteros Parade
The Desfile de Silleteros, or Silleteros Parade, is the highlight of Medellín’s annual Feria de las Flores (Flower Festival). This parade is a vibrant celebration of the region’s rich floral heritage and the artistry of local farmers known as “silleteros.” Silleteros are skilled artisans who create intricate floral arrangements called “silletas,” which they carry on their backs through the streets of Medellín.
The silletas are often elaborate, depicting scenes from daily life, nature, or cultural themes, and are made entirely from a diverse array of flowers cultivated in the nearby towns, particularly Santa Elena. Thousands of spectators, both locals and tourists, line the streets to witness the procession, which is accompanied by music, dancing, and a festive atmosphere.
📚 History & Interesting Facts:
The Silleteros Parade is the flagship event of the Flower Fair. Its history dates back to 1957, when it was held for the first time with the goal of showcasing the region’s floral richness and the creativity of the Santa Elena silleteros. What started as a local tradition of farmers carrying flowers on their backs has evolved into a globally recognized event. The smallest silletera ever seen is that of a two-year-old child. Today, the Silleteros Parade is considered Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Nation and is the most anticipated parade of the Flower Festival.
