Big Small Hydro – Energy sufficiency, a matter for everyone
BIG Small Hydro is a meeting and discussion space to showcase the importance of SHPPs, as well as the benefits, opportunities, and contributions they bring to the country. The event promotes the positioning of SHPPs in conversations about NCREs.
📚 History & Interesting Facts:
The chain of SHPPs (Small Hydroelectric Power Plants) and run-of-river plants in Colombia represents a fundamental part of the country’s energy matrix, focusing on generating clean energy from water resources. Unlike large dams, SHPPs and run-of-river plants are characterized by diverting a portion of a river’s flow, harnessing its kinetic energy to move turbines, and then returning the water to the riverbed, minimizing environmental impact compared to large-scale reservoirs.
Historically, the development of hydroelectric power in Colombia has been driven by the abundant supply of water resources and the mountainous topography, especially in regions like Antioquia, where many of these facilities are located. SHPPs emerged as an alternative to decentralize generation, meet energy demand in rural or hard-to-reach areas, and complement large power plants.
