Colombian Orchids

The orchid is the national flower of Colombia. Colombia has more orchid species than any other country in the world. There are over 4,000 species of orchids worldwide and over 1,500 can be found in Colombia.

The most popular export flower from Colombia is the rose, which is the most gifted flower on Valentine’s Day.

Colombia’s flower industry is important. In 2018, it was responsible for more than 140,000 rural jobs, particularly for mothers who are the sole heads of their families. And in 2017, flower exports from Colombia reached about $1.4 billion USD. Also, the flower industry in Colombia exports about 94 percent of its cargo by air, representing about 75 percent of Colombia’s exports by air.

The Bottom Line: Orquideas Flores y Artesanias – Orchids, Flowers and Crafts at Jardín Botanico

Orquideas Flores y Artesanias is definitely worth seeing during Feria de las Flores in Medellín. This is a very popular exhibition of orchids, flowers and crafts. So, Jardín Botanico will be much busier than normal.

There are only three days left for this major flower exhibition in 2019 during Feria de Las Flores – Friday, Saturday and the last day – Sunday, August 11. We recommend going for at least a couple of hours to see all the orchids and flowers on display.
